FAQs
-
Every referral is personally reviewed by our clinical team. We strive to review referrals promptly and will contact patients regarding next steps after the referral and supporting records have been evaluated.
-
No. In most situations, genetic testing should not be ordered before a genetics consultation. We will review the patient's history, determine whether testing is appropriate, recommend the most informative test when indicated, and help interpret the results in the context of the patient's medical and family history.
-
Yes. Patients are welcome to contact HGI directly. While some insurance plans may require a referral from a healthcare provider, many patients choose to begin with a self-referral. Our team will review each inquiry and help determine the most appropriate next steps.
-
Yes. Referring healthcare providers receive a comprehensive consultation note summarizing our assessment, recommendations, and any genetic testing that is ordered. When testing is completed, you will receive a copy of the results and a results letter explaining the findings. We believe genetics works best as a collaborative partnership with the patient's healthcare team.
-
Yes. Genetics often extends beyond a single consultation. Depending on the condition and the patient's needs, HGI can provide ongoing follow-up, result interpretation as new information becomes available, care coordination, and support for patients and their families over time.
